Cyberattacks Carried Out a Massive Assault on Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

The Opening Ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games were almost disrupted by a possible cyberattack. Olympic Organizers could not determine if the disruption to their critical-systems was in fact the result of malicious cyber activity. The Olympic Games official website and media systems were also impacted by the malicious activity. The attempt to disrupt systems during the Opening Ceremonies were professionally handled by South Korea’s cyber security teams.

South Korea had planned the security for the 2018 Pyeonchang Games well in advance. The country has implemented a huge security force of over 60,000 personnel and they have a cyber division on hand that deals with any form of computer assault carried out by hackers, criminals or by other nations.

The disruptions caused inconveniences to the visitors, athletes and guests of the games. However, no major problem occurred with the security of the organization. A South Korean spokesperson stated that no athlete or spectator was harmed and that their safety was not compromised.

Keep in mind that South Korea has beefed up its security for the Games. They understand that there are many threats they must deal with during the XXIII Olympic Winter Games. North Korea is technically still at war with South Korea. The South Koreans have been anticipating that their estranged neighbors from the north would do something to disrupt the games. They have been preparing for every possible issue that could arise with North Korea.

While the official Olympic website was down for about 12 hours the event’s organizers said this was a minor issue. The site is up and running and security for the computerized network is stronger than ever. Event organizers want to ensure that every aspect of the Games is protected. They are busy working around the clock to ensure that the systems which are a part of the Games are well secured and operating smoothly.
