Razer has launched a new Wi-Fi router that’s specifically optimized for gaming. Known as Sila, it creates a wireless access point (WAP) to which wireless devices like PCs, smartphones and video game consoles can connect. Sila differs from traditional Wi-Fi routers, however, by featuring certain upgrades that improve the performance of online gaming.
According to The Verge, Sila offers faster and more stable Wi-Fi connections than traditional routers. This is a huge selling point for avid gamers, many of whom have become frustrated with dropped connections and high latency. When you’re in the middle of a heated “Fortnite” match, there’s nothing worse than being disconnected from your Wi-Fi. Once the connection drops, you’ll be forced to exit out of the game, thereby forfeiting the round to your opponents.
While video games have been around since the 1960s, the growth of the internet has revolutionized this otherwise popular pastime. The internet allows users to play games with other people regardless of physical or geographic boundaries. To enjoy an online gaming experience, though, users need a fast and reliable internet connection.
Razer’s new Sila Wi-Fi router is designed to create a smoother and more enjoyable online gaming experience. Along with blazing-fast Wi-Fi speeds, Sila allows users to prioritize their wireless applications so that other devices don’t interfere with their online gaming experience. It’s not uncommon for users to have a half-dozen or more devices connected to their Wi-Fi router. As the number of simultaneously connected devices increases, it creates congestion that negatively affects download and upload speeds. Thanks to Sila’s FasTrack feature, users can overcome this problem by prioritizing their wireless applications.
Sila also supports mesh networking, meaning users can install two or more Sila routers to extend their Wi-Fi coverage across a large area. Razer says that three Sila routers, when meshed, is enough to cover a 9,000-square-foot home.
Founded in 2005 by Robert Krakoff and Min-Liang Tan, Razer is a San Francisco-based company that designs and manufactures computer hardware. Some of the company’s top products include laptops, headphones, keyboards and mice. Sila, however, is the first Wi-Fi router produced by Razer.
As of Oct. 3, Sila is available to purchase at select retailers for $249.99.
